Foreword
This tutorial will guide you step-by-step to purchase an overseas server, specifically a VMRack VPS, and quickly install and configure WordPress on it using the BT Panel (BaoTa Panel). This guide is suitable for beginners new to servers and website setup.
1. Purchasing VMRack VPS
Register Account: Visit the VMRack official website, create an account, and complete the registration. (No real-name verification required).
Select Server Plan: Choose the desired VPS plan from the product list, focusing on factors like monthly bandwidth, memory, CPU, and data center location. You may also refer to: Black Friday VMRack VPS Purchase Guide
Payment and Activation: After submitting the order, complete the payment using a supported method and wait for the system to activate the server.
Upon activation, you will receive an email containing the server's IP address, SSH port (default is 22), and the root password.
2. Connecting to the VPS
SSH Tool: Use PuTTY (Windows) or Terminal (macOS / Linux) on your local machine to connect to the VPS.
Connection Command:
ssh root@<Your Server IP>
Password Verification: Enter the root password provided in the email or the password you set. Upon successful entry, you will be in the server's command-line environment.
3. Installing BT Panel (BaoTa)
BaoTa officially provides a one-click installation script supporting major Linux distributions (CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.). Below is an example for CentOS:
yum install -y wget && wget -O install.sh http://download.bt.cn/install/install_6.0.sh && sh install.sh
Or the following command (common for Ubuntu / Debian):
wget -O install.sh http://download.bt.cn/install/install-ubuntu_6.0.sh && sudo bash install.sh
The installation process will take some time. During installation, you only need to type Y and press Enter. You will then see the panel address, username, and a randomly generated password.
4. Logging into BT Panel
Get Panel Address: The script will output the BT Panel login link upon completion, typically in the format:
http://<Server IP>:8090/<random string>Browser Access: Open this link in your browser, enter the username and password to log in.
Initial Setup: Upon first entry, BT Panel will prompt you to install the LNMP or LAMP environment. It is recommended to select LNMP (Nginx + MySQL + PHP) for higher performance.
5. Configuring the LNMP Environment
Select Software Versions: In the "Software Store" or the initial recommendation interface, choose to install Nginx, MySQL, and PHP. Select the latest stable versions; the default options are generally fine.
Wait for Installation: BT Panel will automatically download and install the components (this may take several minutes depending on network speed).
Post-Installation Test: Visit your server IP. If you see the BT Panel test page, the configuration was successful.
6. Adding a Website and Database
Create Site: In the left sidebar of the BT Panel, go to "Website" -> "Add Site."
Domain: Enter the domain name you intend to use (e.g., dcnod.com). If you don't have one yet, you can use the server IP for testing initially.
Root Directory: Defaults to
/www/wwwroot/<domain>, but you can customize it.Create Database: In the "Database" menu, create a MySQL database for WordPress. Remember the database name, username, and password.
7. Installing WordPress
Download WordPress Source Code: In the BT Panel "Files" manager, navigate to the website root directory (or use SSH). Extract the WordPress package into this directory.
Alternatively, execute the following commands directly in the website directory:
Bash
cd /www/wwwroot/<domain> wget https://cn.wordpress.org/latest-zh_CN.tar.gz tar -zxvf latest-zh_CN.tar.gz mv wordpress/* . # Move all files inside the wordpress folder to the current directory rm -rf wordpress latest-zh_CN.tar.gzAccess Installation Page: Enter
http://<Your Domain>in your browser (if the domain is not yet resolved, usehttp://<Server IP>). This will automatically redirect you to the WordPress installation wizard.Fill in Database Information:
Database Name, Username, Password: Should match the database information added in Step 6.
Database Host: Usually
localhost.
Complete Installation: Set the site title, administrator account, and password to finish the WordPress installation.
The admin login address is usually
/wp-admin, e.g.,http://<Your Domain>/wp-admin.
8. Domain Name Resolution
Register Domain: If you don't have a domain yet, purchase one from a domain registrar and complete real-name verification (according to local regulations).
Add Resolution Record: Go to your domain management backend and add an A Record pointing to your server IP.
Wait for Propagation: Domain resolution may take some time to take effect (usually a few minutes to several hours).
9. Next Steps and Optimization
BT Panel Security Configuration: In the panel's security settings, enable the firewall, change the default panel port, or bind an IP to mitigate unnecessary security risks.
Install SSL Certificate: Configure HTTPS in BT Panel's "Website" management. Apply for a free Let's Encrypt certificate to enable encrypted access to your website.
Upgrade PHP, MySQL: Regularly monitor panel prompts and keep software and system components updated for security.
Backup and Monitoring: Set up regular website and database backups within BT Panel, or use remote backup to cloud storage to prevent accidental data loss.
By following these steps, you have successfully set up a WordPress website on a VMRack VPS using the BT Panel. We wish you success in building your site! If you have questions about any steps, you can consult the official documentation or relevant technical communities.
